Pumani bubble CPAP: Finding and fixing internal leaks

A number of problems connected to airflow in the CPAP machine can be caused by air leaking from tubes inside the machine. This film guides you in identifying the source of a leak and shows you how to resolve it.

To check for leakages in the CPAP’s internal tubes, you’ll need the top lid to be open, and the machine powered on.

You’ll need to carry out these checks with extreme caution to avoid the risk of an electric shock.

First, check that none of the tubes in the CPAP machine is disconnected or loose. If this is the case for any of the tubes, reattach it.

Also, check for any kinks in the tubing, and try to straighten them to ensure they’ll allow air to flow through.

If you need to reattach a tube, check that it’s fitting tightly. If not, you might be able to secure the tube with a zip tie or metal crimp.

Or, if there is enough spare length in the tube, you may be able to cut off the loose part at the end and reconnect. We’ll come to this a little later.

If it isn’t obvious where a leak may be coming from, we can find the problem area by using soapy water.

Mix some water and dish washing liquid in a container. Shake or stir it to produce a bubbly mixture.

Then, carefully place a little of the liquid on any parts of the tubing where there could be a leak. The joints and connection ports are the most likely places where leakages happen.

If you see a steady stream of bubbles, then air is leaking from that part of the tubing.

Remove the tube and take a close look to check what the problem is.

It may be that the tip of the tube has become stretched over time and therefore not making a seal around the port. Or there could be a crack in the tubing.

If the fault is at the tip of the tube, you may be able to cut off a small section and place the same tube back in place.

Carefully slice off a length just past the affected part of the tube using a sharp blade. It is important to leave the new end of the tube level and tidy.

You can then replace the tube and check that it fits securely. Then you can test it again with the dish washing liquid and water mixture.

If the problem is further along the tube, and there isn’t enough length available to remove the damaged section, you’ll need to replace it with a complete new length of cable.

When you’ve repaired or replaced any faulty tubing, check whether this has solved the leakage.
